Pete’s Priorities

Pete is a lifelong Democrat but believes Oregon is moving in the wrong direction. We’re failing to deliver on some of the most basic expectations of government: to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for our families to grow, our businesses to thrive and our communities to gather.

  • Reform Measure 110 to end open-air hard drug use without consequences in our public spaces.

  • Reform our State mental health laws that currently limit the ability of local governments to remove seriously mentally ill individuals from the street and place them into mandatory treatment.

  • Deploy State resources (human and capital) to enable local governments to enforce these new laws in ways that also address the root problems (e.g. fund and stand up emergency drug detox centers and state mental health facilities).

  • Limit greenhouse gas emissions by implementing a cap-and-trade system alongside proven best practices to make Oregon a climate leader in the country.

Pete Will Also Be A Forceful Advocate For:

  • Women's reproductive rights

  • Strict common sense gun safety laws

  • Robust and well-funded K-12 public education (so that every Oregonian has an opportunity for upward social mobility through the public education system like Pete had)

  • Increasing the availability of affordable housing

  • Establishing a public universal healthcare option

  • Gender equity in the workplace

  • Reducing the use of plastics and protecting our wild places

  • Expanding the use of alternative transportation including light rail, street cars, bike lanes, increasing pedestrian infrastructure, and safe routes to school

  • LGBTQ+ rights and marriage equality

Recently, Pete learned that when city and county officials sought State assistance to tackle the city’s problems using more traditional law and order policy tools, they did not have the support of Portland’s current State representatives who still believe in the failed policies that have driven the current crisis.  As a result, local leaders have not received the type of support from the State they need to revitalize our city.  Our local leaders cannot turn our streets around without help from the State.

District 33 encompasses not only the amazing neighborhoods of Northwest Portland and St. Johns but also downtown Portland–the economic engine of our State.  With downtown in crisis, our State representative should be the one who champions State policies that will enable local leaders to deliver a healthy and vibrant civic and business community downtown.
